Organic Tofu: Tofu is underrated in the world of food and can be very flavoursome, it absorbs flavours making is highly versatile. There are different types of tofu that are optimal when used with different cooking methods just as different cuts of meat are best cooked certain ways.
Silken Tofu: has the most water left in and has a lovely soft texture, but is likely to break up if you try and fry it, it is great in soups. Firm & Extra Firm Tofu: has more of the water pressed out to give a more solid, meaty texture. Its great marinated, in curries and fried. Smoked Tofu: firm tofu that has been smoked like smoked cheese, or more commonly has had some liquid smoke flavouring added to it. I would try to avoid the smoke flavoured ones myself as it is an additive not naturally derived. As with all things you need to find a brand of tofu you like as each manufacturer will make theirs differently. It is important that when your are purchasing tofu you ensure that it is organic, never eat non organic tofu as it is GMO soy than has numerous negative effects on our health and has been highly sprayed with pesticides. Also chances are that when you purchase products such as veggie burgers, veggie dogs, vegetable sausages & faux nuggets chances are they are made from GMO soy. You can make these yourself very cost effectively and easily using Seitan (click here), another great meat alternative you can make at home with organic products. Although a great alternative to meat tofu is not something we should consume in large amounts, as it contains many things that in large amounts can be harmful to us thus everything in moderation. (Click here for more information). Thus Soy milk is not the best milk alternative for vegans and vegetarian's. Tempeh: Soybeans that are cooked and fermented whole with a specific mould which breaks down the soybeans and forms a cake. To be honest I’m yet to experiment with tempeh. *Tempeh coconut curry Seitan: Easy to make at home is a dough made with vital wheat gluten, a high-protein wheat flour, and liquid. The dough can be rinsed or poached to become a chewy meat substitute that can be added to many different dishes, including curries, vegie sausages, veggie nuggets etc. It can be flavoured various different ways and can even be made to taste like chicken. (click here for a recipe) Please be aware that Seitan is using 100% gluten derived from wheat thus if your don’t consume gluten this is not for you. Don't be discouraged on your juicing journey, everyone you tell who has not gone down this path or perhaps they have and didn't like it has something to say, but do your research and know that this is good and healthy for you, it will clean out your system to allow your body to heal and reboot from years of hard work digesting and using the bad, processed and unhealthy things we put into our bodies.
The one thing I hear people say is that eeew that looks/ sounds disgusting, (well hey I think fried chicken and burgers look horrible and we eat those cause …… they taste good), or I could never do that, that can't be good for you for long periods of time etc etc. Well we know its good for us, we know its healthier than many of our other options available to us on a daily basis and we know it tastes amazing, sure I have made a juice or 2 that was a bit meh, but it was not bad and I just don't make that one again. So if your wanting to take this journey or you have started and feeling deflated with words from those around you with what they have to say about it (everyone is entitled to an opinion be it wright wrong or misinformed). Take your inspiration from the web and the many others out there who have successfully gone on this journey and have amazing stories to tell as a result of it. See here links to other amazing juicing stories and inspiration! Don't use scales!! they don't do anything to inspire you, go by your size, your figure if its changing you know its working, I myself think scales are evil as they are never the same from one day to the next and its highly non motivational. I know what makes me happy when I look in the mirror or when my fat jeans are to big, that is more than enough motivation to know I am on the right track and doing the right thing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-XDSpuMIMPs - Fat sick and nearly dead, Joe's juicing journey. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ULpibBGYYFg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gjt3bxyKcCI - And one of my faves is this video, check it out! Great inspiration! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bacWiM2SbGg - This is just so you know these things happen to everyone on their juicing journey. And if you your in need of advice, inspiration or a chat on you juicing journey, don't hesitate to flick me a message. So everywhere I look with my juicing diet research suggests different time frames for your juicing diet that are "healthy" for you. I myself am going to continue this for as long as it doesn't effect my health with my maximum time frame being 100 days.
Although being aware that a juice fast/ diet does have an effect on your body that is very positive however it makes you feel horrible for the first 1-2 weeks. Such things as headaches, stomach aches, pains in your lungs, and muscles, I have even started to break out with a weird rash. This is all part of my body drawing out and getting rid of the build up of toxins from my body with this juicing diet, these things are normal so don't be discouraged. I think the minimum time anyone should juice for is the time it takes for all these side affects to pass so you know the toxins are out of your system, this varies from about so about 30 days. You may need to work up to this and don't be discouraged if you fall off the wagon, when your friends and family are around eating all the glorious food your so used to, it gets hard there is no question, even walking near food stalls has been hard for me ( I had to talk myself out of buying seaweed sushi the other day, it looked so good!) but just get back up and keep going, maybe just add a day or 2 to your fast and remember its an great attempt no matter what, next time you'll make it the full 30/60/100 days without hiccups. But you have to start the journey to make it a success and if you've made it this far its a success of itself. *Tonight we are going to restaurant birthday dinner and as it would be self torture for me to not join in on the festivities we are celebrating with food I am having a vegan/vegetarian (depends on what I can get at the steak restaurant) option. I will just add days to my fast. This is what works for me, I am happy to sit at the dinner table with my juice, but I can't take it with me to a restaurant and I won't miss out so that’s the decision I have made so I don't get discouraged and completely fall off the wagon. And this is not going to be my last juice fast just a really amazing first attempt. You may decide to take some juice with you when you go to a restaurant its up to you. If you can make it through you 30 day juice fast with no bumps your awesome and I want to hear your journey here! But just remember its what works for you no one else, not even those articles you read on juicing as I don't here in those articles how hard it can be, and trust me it can get hard as we are creatures of habit and habits are hard to break but never impossible. This is your journey no one else so leave aside others opinions, ideas and judgment and go for it! I have faith in you!! Juicing Side effects - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yv3a8AKVht4 HealthI want to improve my health as its getting to an unmanageable stage of lethargy, illness and allergies. Boosting my energy with a simple morning juice, you don't have do go as extreme as a fast and you can work up to fasting (this is preferable) . You'll start to sleep better and get to sleep easier and wake up feeling awake and alert. I myself have always had issues getting to sleep, and waking up or getting out of bed at any time can be awful. However since being on the juice fast I have noticed that waking up in the morning is much easier and not a long process like before I started where it can take up to 1.5 hours. I have also long suffered from an iron deficiency and the only thing I know that helps me is leafy greens full of the stuff, like spinach, silver beet (chard) and kale which also contain vitamin C and without Vitamin C my body can't absorb the iron, thus meat is useless in aiding me in my iron supplementation. I also love these three veggies, they are so versatile, however I can sit down to a whole bowl of lightly steamed silver beat.... nom nom nom. WeightSo over the years like many others I went from slim and carefree to overweight and unhappy. So I decided to make a change, I have tried many things over the years and they have worked to a certain degree but nothing I was ever able to stick with, hence a lifestyle change. I decided to start this change with a juicing diet, I myself love juicing. And you have to start somewhere if your going to make a difference so I will keep you updated on the weight loss, I don't have a weight goal and don't read the scales ever, I can gauge my weight by looking in the mirror and by my clothing size, scales just make me feel worse thus they are nothing more than a dust collector in my house. I know what makes me feel good and confident when I look in the mirror so that's what I'm aiming for. Illness Juicing can assist with a number of ailments such as: Headaches, sleeping disorders, mental alertness, mental health, and blood pressure just to name a few. It starts you on a journey to improve your lifestyle.
Not feeling ill every other day has been a plus for me, the lethargy is diminished and I am confident to get rid of it by the end of my juicing journey. References: http://www.mindbodygreen.com/0-3086/7-Reasons-You-Need-to-Be-Juicing.html http://realfoodswitch.com/why-raw-food/11-reasons-juicing-amazing/ Super Juice Me Documentary - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uwAC6EEx2Y4 I did quite a lot of research before purchasing my juicer as you should but above all, the most important thing I found was that single gear and twin gear juicers, otherwise known as masticating juicers are the best. The reasons for this are that the single gear juicers don't heat up to high temperatures like some other juicers thus keeping the nutrient value of your juice higher than non single/twin gear juicers. They are also quieter than the more common centrifugal juicer making it a great option for a share house situation as it wont wake anyone up.
These juicers are also able to juice grasses, make nut butter, hummus, mince nuts and fruits and vegetables and the other day I even made my other half pasta from scratch, I even made the sauce with the Oscar vitalmax juicer. The twin gear juicers are quite a lot more than the single gear thus not making it viable for most including myself however the single gear is quite a good price and although more than the every popular centrifugal juicers it is also a lot more versatile and produces more juice. There are many reasons to purchase a quality single or twin gear juicer when starting a wellness journey rather than simply purchasing a centrifugal juicer, a centrifugal juicer is very noisy and fiddly to clean so it makes juicing daily or more than once a day more a hassle and a chore than something to enjoy. You will also not yield large amounts of juice with a centrifugal machine as you would with a single gear juicer as well as this as I mention before the centrifugal machines get hot leading to destruction of nutrients in you juice meaning that it will not be as beneficial to your body and will also not keep, meaning if you want juice with nutrients it needs to be made just before you plan to consume it rather than storing it in the fridge. Single gear juicers on the other hand are amazingly versatile machines capable of creating nutrient and flavor dense juices that will keep in the fridge for up to 1 day, however it is always more beneficial to consume juices as you make them to gain the a higher nutrient value. Single gear juicers also produce amazing pulp that you can use in cakes, soups, stocks and other recipes meaning nothing goes to waste. It effectivley juices hard and soft fruits and vegetables as well as grasses, aloe and even limes with the skin on. The Oscar Vital Max Juicer also comes with a mincing attachment, great for making nut butter, hummus, dips, sauces, soup and thick dressings. The Oscar Vital max also comes with attachments for making noodles and pasta as well as dough for breads. They are also amazingly easy and quick to assemble, disassemble and clean. |
